Our 2024 Review

Hello!

Welcome to another yearly review where we reflect on 2024 and set our goals for 2025. We also have some prompts at the end to help you reflect on the year and set goals for 2025 too 😄

Our 2024 Highlights

  • January – During our time in Jakarta for the Indonesia Masters, we visited one of our subscribers Ronald, who has a badminton court in his house! It was a very cool experience playing with Ronald and his friends on his ‘home court’.
  • February – Winning the English National Championships for the 2nd year in a row!
  • March – We started filming some of the trickshots for the ‘Accuracy Challenge’ video which we released later in the year. It was a lot of fun filming some of these and amazing how our consistency improved after so many attempts!
  • April – Receiving our Limited Edition 500,000 Subscriber T-Shirts from VICTOR. It was a surreal moment having t-shirts with our logo on, and even more surreal that they ended up selling out in less than 24 hours!
  • May – Filming & releasing our favourite video of 2024: ‘Pros vs Future Pros’ with Sophie (8 years old) and Michelle (10 years old). Every time we watch it, we still find ourselves smiling throughout.
  • June – Going on holiday without our badminton rackets for the first time in 3 years! Although we still spent quite a lot of time training and editing videos, we had some much needed relaxation.
  • July –  The highlight of this month might seem small but it was spending a day reading through comments and messages we’ve received around how we have helped players improve their game and enjoy their badminton more, this is such a great motivator for us.
  • August – This month had a lot of exciting moments: one was reaching 500,000 subscribers on our YouTube Channel. A second was going to Paris to watch the Olympics, where we watched our friends Zheng Siwei & Huang Yaqiong win the gold medal in mixed doubles. What a month!
  • September – After running a successful first ever Badminton Insight Training Weekend in August, we ran a second one – both of these are up there in our top highlights of the year! It was amazing meeting subscribers in person and seeing everyone having a great time whilst improving their game.
  • October – We got back into competing in tournaments, playing the Artic Open, Denmark Open and the Hylo Open. We were pretty happy with our performances despite being out of competition for a few months!
  • November – Training in China with the Olympic Champions, Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong! It was an amazing experience which we of course documented in 2 YouTube videos!
  • December – Gaining some more caps for England, on the same weekend as Greg’s 30th birthday!

Looking back at the highlights, like we’ve done here, can really help you to set your direction to achieve more similar highlights, and so can setting goals.

If we hadn’t set ourselves some very ambitious goals over the years we definitely wouldn’t have had some of the above highlights! We’re big fans of setting ‘HUG’ goals – Huge Unbelievably Great goals.

If you’d have said to us 5 years ago we’d be training with the Olympic Champions, or reaching 500,000 subscribers, we’d have said this wasn’t achievable, or even realistic – which is why you should sometimes set goals that feel huge, unbelievable, and great!

Goals For 2025

As well as reflecting on the previous year, we also like to set goals for the new year! So here are some of our goals for 2025:

  • Badminton –
    • This one is exactly the same as last year 😂 To get into the All England and avenge what is now 3 years of heartbreak! To do this we need to perform well in January to get our ranking up, and then perform very well against whoever we are drawn against.
  • Badminton Insight –
    • 2025 is the year of levelling up: we want to place a huge focus on improving in everything we do – from the video quality, to our behind the scenes processes to products, and more!
    • Our 2nd goal is to release a video every Sunday
    • And our final goal, release a new product 👀
  • Personal –
    • Read 10 books each and make notes on them. Whilst this might sound easy to some, alongside training, filming and editing, this proved very difficult last year!

We of course have many other smaller goals (and a very long to-do list!) but these are the main ones we want to focus on and develop habits around.

Your Highlights & Planning

Hopefully we’ve inspired you to do some reflection and planning for 2025 too! Below are some question prompts to help give you some ideas on how you can do this. Last year, we sent these prompts to friends and we went through them together on New Year’s Eve, and we enjoyed it so much we’ll be doing this again this year – so why not join us?

Reflecting On 2024

If you haven’t already, think of some of your top highlights of each month – if you’re not sure then try looking through some photos on your phone, this helps us! (in fact it was actually a goal of ours to take more photos a few years back for this exact reason!)

Next you can think of the following…

Lessons from 2024:

  • Challenges I faced
  • Things I learnt

Favourites of 2024:

  • Favourite places
  • Favourite quotes
  • Favourite day
  • Favourite badminton session (think about why!)
  • Favourite Badminton Insight videos (let us know!)

Habits of 2024:

  • 3 positive habits
  • 3 negative habits

Planning For 2025

  • One word to describe how I want 2025 to be
  • 3 main goals for the next year
  • 3 habits I want to adopt
  • 3 new experiences I would like to have
  • 3 emotions I want to feel more of
  • 3 ways things I can do that are out of my comfort zone

How To Stay On Track With Your Goals

In our 2023 review, we delved deeper into setting goals and building habits, and this year we thought we’d talk more about how to ensure that you stay on track with these goals as the year goes on! Here are our top 7 tips:

#1 – Break down bigger goals into smaller ones

Setting big goals are great, but they can sometimes feel overwhelming and very far away on their own! That’s why we like to set smaller, more manageable milestones towards our bigger goals to ensure we’re staying motivated on the way to that bigger goal.

For example, your goal might be to play in a higher level tournament (e.g. Gold domestic tournament in England), so it can be useful to set smaller milestones in order to get there. For example, to medal at a lower level tournament (Bronze domestic tournament).

Or, if your goal is to improve your smash power, you can break it down further into the different components of improving your smash, such as footwork, technique or strength. Then, you can set goals to improve each of these areas, which will then eventually help you improve your smash power!

Make sure you recognise and celebrate achieving these smaller goals too 📈

#2 – Track your progress

For example, you can keep a journal of your training sessions and tournaments so you always know what you’re doing well and what you need to work more on. This also enables you to do more purposeful practice during training, which is something we speak a lot about!

Another example is if you’re not great at getting your strength and conditioning sessions in, you can also create a habit tracker to ensure you stay on track. You can even make it into a little game and give yourself a reward after completing a certain amount of sessions in the gym.

#3 – Have regular check-ins

Having regular check-ins with another person is a great way to keep yourself accountable towards your goals. This can be with your coach, training partner or even a friend that would be willing to help you stay on track!

They don’t have to be lengthy check-ins, but they are aimed at reminding yourself of your goals, celebrating any improvements and seeing if any adjustments are needed. We’d recommend doing this either every month or every quarter and actually scheduling these into your calendar so you don’t miss them, especially as we get later into the year!

#4 – Develop habits

Having habits that are part of your daily or weekly schedule will help you continue to put in the work to achieve your goals, even when life gets in the way!

We love habit stacking, and as professional players we’re in a pretty good habit of training every day but what we now do is add on tasks before or after these sessions that will help us achieve our goals.

This might be to read for 10 minutes whilst having breakfast before the session (rather than scrolling on our phones!), or maybe to film a video every Monday after our session.

#5 – Be clear on your ‘why’

Understanding ‘why’ you are doing something will play a huge factor in being able to stay motivated and on track with positive actions towards your goals. Whether it’s to play a specific tournament, to win the league with your club, to enjoy playing badminton once a week, or even to improve your fitness and health so you that you’ll be able to play with your son or daughter when they grow up – everyone has their own unique ‘why’!

Your ‘why’ is what will help push you through the times where you don’t want to follow through with your positive habits, so it’s important that it is one that you really believe in!

#6 – Stay flexible and adaptable to setbacks

Setbacks and unexpected events are inevitable, whether it’s an injury, a loss in a tournament, or even something simple like scheduling conflicts that disrupt your training. Instead of letting these derail your progress, it’s important to be able to adapt and find alternative ways to stay on track.

Our old coach always used to say to us ‘injury is opportunity’. For example, if you sprain your ankle and can’t practice on court, you can instead focus on your upper-body strength or learning more about tactics.

This allows you to maintain a positive mindset, knowing that these challenges are simply a part of the bigger journey. And again, ensuring you stand by your ‘why’!

#7 – Enjoy the process

Is this one cheesy? Yes. Have we said it before? Yes. Regardless, it’s so important to remember to have FUN – the journey is a lot longer than the destination, so make sure you enjoy the journey!

Final Thoughts

We hope the prompts and tips in this article can help you on your journey – whether that’s in relation to your badminton, work, or life in general.

With that said, we wish you an amazing 2025 and we hope you ‘smash’ all of the goals you set and ‘clear’ all of the challenges that come your way!
